Loss.....

I need to read this today, but most of all with the Lord's help, to believe it.....

Ponder well the quality of the comfort you are deprived of.....children and all other relations are but common blessings, which God bestows upon his friends and enemies, and by the having, or not having of them no man knows either love or hatred. It is said of the wicked in Psalm 17:14 that they are full of children. Full of sin, yet full of children. It is mistaking the quality of nature of our enjoyments that plunges us so into trouble when we lose them, or don't have them. We think they are necessary for our happiness.....that we are utterly undone when they fail us. Yet this is our mistake.....We may be happy without these things. It is not father, mother, wife, or child in which our chief good and happiness lies, we have higher, better, and more enduring things than these, all these may perish and yet our souls be secure and safe....God has better things to comfort his people with than these, and worse rods to afflict them with than the loss of these.

It was not Christ's intent to purchase for you a sensual content in the enjoyment of these comforts...but to redeem you from iniquity, purge you from corruptions, sanctify you, wean your hearts from this world, and so to order your present condition that, finding no rest and content here, you might the more ardently desire the rest which remains for the people of God......Many of God's dearest children have been denied comforts such as these, and many have been deprived of them, yet they were never the farther from Christ and heaven for that.

Consider though He should deny you comforts of this kind, yet He has far better to bestow upon you....You have excellent scripture to that purpose in Isaiah 56:4-5:

"For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off."

Men's names are to be continued in their children...and a numerous issue is no small honor (Psalm 127). God here promised to supply and make good the want of children, and whatsoever, either honor here, or memorial hereafter, by bestowing upon them a matter of far greater honor, a name better than the names of sons and daughters.

It is a greater honor to be the child of God than to have the greatest honor or comfort that children ever gave to their parents.

Poor heart, you are no doubt dejected by this affliction that lies upon you, as if all the joy and comfort were now cut off from you in this world.....a husband, a wife, a child are great, very great things, but surely they will seem little things when the Lord shall set himself by them in the soul. And what do you know but God has set these earthly comforts aside to make room for heavenly ones. It may be that God is coming to communicate Himself more sweetly, more sensibly to your souls, and these providences are preparing the way of the Lord....Oh that you did but consider the consolations that are with God for such as answer His ends in affliction, and patiently wait on Him for comfort. He has comforts for you far transcending the joy of children."

"Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."
Isaiah 55:6,8-1
